5 Quotes to inspire you in 2016
At the beginning of every year we’re so optimistic for the year ahead. This time last year I remember feeling like 2015 would be MY year – that it would be my time to get everything done that I wanted, to reach for the stars and grab them, to rock the universe with my personal brand of awesome.
Yeah. That didn’t last long.
I haven’t blogged much about my personal life over the past year because, dear reader, if I were to be honest: there’s wasn’t much good to talk about. From the car accident that I am thankful every day I survived, the concussion that ensued, to the loss of my husband’s grandmother, followed by the devastating loss of my 14 year old pup Harley and wrap it all up with a blow-out breakup with a toxic friend… to say that 2015 was a challenge for me would be an understatement.
Earlier this week I wrote about resolutions and how to keep them. Today’s post is filled with my 5 favorite quotes to help us through 2016 in case we lose sight of our goals. Life will, inevitably, happen… and I am hopeful that these quotes will help you (and me) when it does.
It hurts because it matters.
As previously mentioned, 2015 was my grief year. I was so frequently mad with myself for being so upset – for grieving so much – but then I realized… it’s okay. It hurts. It’s supposed to. It hurt so much because it mattered so much to me. It’s important to grieve loses in life, feel the hurt that comes along with it – and allow yourself to feel hurt. Your hurt is a tribute to what was. And only when you experience the hurt and acknowledge the situation can you move on.
You only fail when you stop trying
We’re really mean to ourselves, aren’t we? We beat ourselves up when we don’t win everything. If we don’t hit our weight lose target, we punish ourselves. We study hard for exams and get a C+, we give up. It’s so important to realize that life is one big long war – losing one battle doesn’t mean you give up the war. As long as you’re working toward your goal, you’re winning. Set backs will happen, wrenches will get thrown in your path – but keep to your true north and you’ll never fail.
Actually, I can
There’s going to be a lot of people in your life that will tell you that you can’t. And the bigger your dreams, the more they will try and convince you that you’re crazy. The secret to making this one real for you is to realize that those naysayers are projecting on to you. Life may have put them in a position where they were to scared to chase their dreams and went the safe route. They aren’t usually malicious when saying you can’t – they don’t want you to be hurt, disappointed, etc. To that, I say: be a rebel. You CAN. Actually, you CAN. Show them what you’re made of, babe. You’re made of star stuff – so shine.
Never Put The Key To Your Happiness In Somebody Else’s Pocket.
I love this one in particular because it speaks to something I am so passionate about which is: know your worth. Your happiness or worth doesn’t depend on the opinion of your mother, father, sibling, partner, or random stranger. Decide what you want and get it on your own merit. Build something yourself, do something yourself. Achieve something amazing that you want by yourself so that you know you can. If you can build a resume of awesome things you’ve done by yourself – no one can hold the key to your happiness.
There’s nothing more important than going after something you love – for yourself. Often times, I get questions about how to get into modeling, or how to start blogging. Just do it. You want to be a blogger? Start writing. Start taking pictures. Don’t worry about the details now – just do it. Whatever it is. Want to be a world-renowned DJ? Start mixing today and don’t stop. Do your research, turn on your blinders to the naysayers and get it, girl. Make your passion your sanctuary. Through my grief, blogging was my sanctuary. In this space I had created, I felt safe. I understood how the world worked in that space: plan your outfit, location scout, write my story, plan makeup, shoot, edit, post.
My 2016 Mantra
“I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say ‘because of you, I didn’t give up.’”
When I came across this quote, it spoke to me. Sometimes I get caught up in the day-to-day of everything. The emails. The work. The deadlines. But this quote reminded me of why I started this website and why I get up everyday and work on this. Because I want to inspire you. I want to encourage you. I want to affect you and tell you – style has no size. You can wear that bikini. Love yourself. Care for yourself. Be the best version of yourself possible.
If I can do that, I am living my true purpose.
